Can you tell which Aussie products these are? Year 5s have made a start on their food closeups using the grid method to do their drawings. Can’t wait to see these evolve over the next couple of weeks!

😍😍😍😍😍All of the colouuuuurrrrs!!!! Finally feeling like the ball is rolling after the first week of repeating the art room rules 16 times to every class 🤪 Year 6s are looking at colour theory to make their self portraits POP. First they are starting with the background, sponging on 3 analogous colours + white 🧽

I would love to get some opinions on this topic. My Year 4s will be looking at Aboriginal art techniques of rarrk and x-ray art from Arnhem Land. Too often people generalise and associate Aboriginal art with dots, when there are so many more methods and techniques from symbols to the recording of songlines in so many varieties of ways.

I am hoping to expand my students understanding of what Aboriginal art is BUT I am super conscious that I myself am not Indigenous and therefore should not be the teaching this. I have discussed with my students the difference between saying “I am making Aboriginal art” to “I am learning about Indigenous techniques to make my own art” which from researching around seems to be the correct protocol (?!)

What more can I do? Should I abandon this unit? 😬 I would hate to be tokenistic but also really strongly feel that kids learn through hands on experiences and learn to appreciate through what they know and have seen. Thoughts?!

Spent today making teacher example artworks for my Term 1 units. My Year 5s will be looking at Aussie products and painting a close up using the grid method (now I have an excuse to go buy iced vovos, tim tams and golden gaytimes etc🤗) Can you tell what this closeup is from? 🥜🧈
